Stenciling artist-Frances Hansen

My first impression about Frances Hansen’s work is her stenciling work which was displayed in the library. She used cleaning products or bottles which were not making and were not sale in every supermarket, then made black and white opposite stenciling shapes and colors, it presented the negative and positive format, also painted the background with purple and soft green colors to make the warm and elegant composition. Therefore, she made series of works with same stenciling techniques, and she developed and transformed her works on many of baskets decorations, such as installing art pile up the baskets together, also made the stenciling on each basket with black or white bottle images.

However, her body of work had represented the typical home decorations, in each of works had showed she loves simple, artistic. No matter the color used and the whole concept, she created the warm and comfortable visual effect. I am festinated with Frances’s work about she used amount of objects, source materials to create series of compositions.

Furthermore, during her creation, she collecting recycling crafts, for example, the pieces of card board, boxes, the plastic bags from air line, or the objects which she had been used such as the package papers, newsprint, advertise, and so on. She combined with those pieces of crafts to create the huge construction. The component which without the complicated subject matter, she just collected and separated the pieces of things into the small plastic and the bag of sheet protector. I am curious about her idea that she remade the recycling things to become a new style of object compositions.

Overall, I very like her creations and all of her works have related with living style, and home decoration. She made tiny little thing to become the brilliant vision, and the great visual condition of her stenciling and objects.

A Printer and a Painter- Emma McLellan

In my point of view, the artist Emma McLellan, in her entire spectrum of printing and painting work which represented the different color tone of ancient woman’s paintings in her previously work. And later of her masterpiece, she used different kind of animals, creature portraits to create series of pattern works. For example, she found some references from the books such as the medieval bestiary, then mixed with the ornamental curiosity. I am so festinated about some of her work like “Reiterate” and “Interior in Velvet Blue Damask,” those series of compositions which has made with different painting techniques, also drew by different methods. In “Reiterate,” she used William Morris work to recreate the new patterns with animals and flowers, and replicated the symmetrical images, such as flipping, or reflecting the layout. However, it just like same patterns connective together, then showed the particular format, it looks elegant and the whole layout shows ancient luxurious style.

Furthermore, most of her printing work was made by paint on panel and screen print techniques, also combined with science and technology by using Adobe photoshop, to rearrange the series of reflecting patterns. First, I like her exquisite drawing skills with fine lines to show the animal’s movement, and the strip on them bodies. In “Chimera Series”, at first I thought she used the black pen to draw the outline of the images, and the images shows vivid forms, just like every animal which drew on the car board, or canvases were have vitality, very natural movement such as creeping, climbing, walking, or standing.

Overall, to look though her subject matter, no matter used different methods, or materials, the whole body is strong and fascinating shows the new range of interesting compositions with the creatures and animals we did not see before. Her conceptual idea was kind of fairy tale and the characters whom from the myth, these ideas has developed the interesting atmosphere and the strong vision attract many people’s vision

The Lecture11

In my opinion, in the definition of materiality, affect, and site are influence each other. The artist did not only present their work on a piece of paper, but can explored and extend their work by using different media, technical to create and represent the greatest composition.

However, I very impressed about artist Jackson Pollock, he used different color paints such as basic oil paint red, blue, yellow, green, etc. Then sprinkled on the canvas or the paper, and to look through his compositions, it all without the subject matter and the clearly forms. Also it did not have any figures and strong lines showed in whole construction. I thought he made so many mass drawing without used the paint brush to paint on the surface, and he just waved both his arms and held the brushes with some of wet oil paint, and sprinkled the paints on the papers or canvas surface. It produced the special and powerful effects that the paints were combined together, some of the color has lost the original color, but the whole compositions looked busy, tidy, even the tense which obviously to present the artist spent a lot of time to created the strange forms without the fine lines, he just like Da Da Art style and the surrealist who influencing the 20th century of contemporary art. No matter the crazy and the mass paintings, Jackson Pollock was created the particular modern art, then used different type of paint technique to built up the strange forms.

Overall, except the Jackson Pollock, there are lots of artists makes the great masterpiece that influence the modern art history, and created the new and fresh pieces of works which attracts many people’s vision. Therefore, used different kind of media to make the festinate works.

The Lecture10

In today’s lecture and tutorial class, in my point of view this was my first time to focus on the topic about “Representation and Museum.” Also this is my first time to go to the Auckland Museum. I am so curious about the museum’s exhibition and the ancient objects, or the history of culture background, or anything about national geography, and so on.

In the lecture, I am very impressed about Francis Upritchard’s works, to look through her compositions, I like her “Save Yourself” and “Traveller’s Collection.” Both of her works represented the ancient of Egypt culture, the curse mummy, the bury things that belong to the dead mummy, and the strange collections. In her first work, she made a grave on the gallery’s floor and she dismantled part of floor, then mix with sand on that space, just like you stood in the under grave. And the mummy which made by mixing media was lay down on the ground like the real scene and real ancient grave was be presented in the gallery. Besides, Francis made the particular effect that made the mummy alive, he can scream and shake, it was an brilliant idea and her personal conceptual idea that create the whole framework. However, she was fancied with the Egypt ancient stuffs, no matter the old legend, or the historical context, even the ancient fashion costumes, she used her own made to build up the “real life” and “the truth” in front of the gallery.

What is more her whole projects and the objects are fascinating and realistic that changed the unreal things into the “live.”

Furthermore, in the tutorial class, we went to the museum to find out more research and idea that associated with the lecture topic, it has provided many details and subject matters. And then I was very enjoyed seeking and looking around the exhibitions in the museum. I discovered many things undiscovered, also the memories that we lost in many centuries ago, such as historical remains, ecology, archeology, the natural environment, ancient things, and the cultures in different world wide.

Overall, it was the best experience and the greatest observational time to realize that many different things we could not find, the definition we misunderstood, and the part of life we went through before.

The Lecture9

15/05/09

About today’s lecture, we discussed about “Gender, the Body, and the Gaze. From my point of view, the definition of gender has refers to social attributes and opportunities that associated with being female and male, and the relationships between women and men also boys and girls, therefore, the relationships between women and between men. Besides, these attributes between male and female, those relationships in socially constructed are becoming an importance topical subject, generally it has becoming very common and popular socially relations that we can see in the world wide. Also, with the trend of times, gender can be changeable between those women and men relationships; although gender had another meaning that can be allowed or not allowed in contemporary sociality, but still some of people could not accept the “real” relationships between women and between men. In addition, I think “gender” means sexual identity, no matter male or female whom create the art history that influence the contemporary art, or whom try to pretend like a homosexual or heterosexuality people, I think it is the way of them personal ideas, they are using different viewpoint to look through themselves and change them outside of the figure.

Furthermore, I like the artist Grayson Perry, he is a brilliant potter that create the elegant and gorgeous pots. He change the traditional art form into another drawing lines and colors, for instance, I like one of his work called “Barbaric Splendour”(the picture which is above the first pargraph), the color and the picture which he drew is very artistic and had combined with the classic art and contemporary art. Also I like the way he used the black color to be an outline, then used the different color to paint the interior of the line area, he did not draw the fine line in those figure, but in whole conceptual idea is an outstanding creation that I have not seen before. However, he has a hobby that likes to wear the girl’s dress, he is not the “real homosexual”, he just like wearing the beautiful dress and pretend like a girl or woman. I very impressed that he wear the girl’s stuff like that and doing the girl’s attitude and doing any movement like the girl, I think it just like his performing art “pretend like somebody.”

Overall, it is a great lecture to realize how so popular and an important that gender had related not only the traditional art, but also had related to the contemporary art.

Research-Lisa Reihana

Lisa Reihana: Digital Marae
A powerful photographic and new media series by leading Maori artist Lisa Reihana, in Govett-Brewster Gallery, 2007

Reihana’s work communicates complex ideas about indigenous identity and bi-cultural living and in this ongoing series she continues her investigation of the concept of the marae. In Digital marae she recreates a wharenui within a digital realm.
In a modern take on the pouwhenua or wooden carvings found lining a wharenui, Reihana’s large and dramatic photographs represent Maori ancestral figures. These images are imbued with a feeling of magic surrealism, seamlessly blending the traditional with contemporary elements. Govett-Brewster Director Rhana Devenport says, “Lisa Reihana’s Digital marae is without a doubt one of the most poetic and powerful photographic series produced in New Zealand in recent times. “This presentation of the work includes new dimensions within the series and the Govett-Brewster is honoured to be presenting these works for the first time.”

Her work is held in numerous public and private collections and she has a strong international presence, most recently exhibiting in Global feminisms at the Brooklyn Museum, and Native Portraits at Museo Laboratorio di Arte Contemporanea in Rome and delivering a lecture at the Tate Modern in London.

In my point of view, we discussed about “Indigenous Narratives” has connected with art, such as art will talk about tribal native, ethnic, ancestral, majority and minority culture, etc. In definition of “narratives” this word is telling the story, or the other meaning that telling the protagonist and antagonist, so the whole meaning is the composition of artist work had the own background and connotation in it. That is why I like Richard Orjis and Lisa Reihana works, both them done very nice photo shot and represented the great performing art in their works.

About Richard’s composition, I like the way he used computer technical by using the Adobe Photoshop combine with his own photo shot, for example in his series of Gorse and Orchids, 2007. The whole overview and concept idea had represented the natural, native, and kind of talk about the tribal cultural decorations. I have seen his performing video before that the models grab the charcoal, then smeared over their bodies and made their whole figure looked like the “charcoal-burner” very dirty, unclean, also without the clothes. Richard took the models photo shot and used the photoshop to displayed the decorations around the body such as the wreath of flowers around the neck, or covered the face, or mouth. It was a brilliant idea and the symbolism of photograph that showed the significant of the background. Therefore, it was a greatest design which made the photograph became the different visual effects.

Furthermore, I very interested in Lisa Reihana’s works, looked through her series of her compositions, she had introduced the cultural design the way of her family background, it was strong and powerful subject matter that she represented in all the photographs. I like one of her photograph called “mahuika” the strong image that attract me a lot, the old woman setting on the highest chair, textile custom ling on the ground, and the charcoal gray sky in the background. I felt anxious when I saw the photograph, but the color used was very great and can attract people’s vision. Meanwhile, Tessa has let us watched the video “Wog Features” which was made by Lisa Reihana as well. She performed the one of actress in the video, and she used many objects like her own hand crafts which was made by pieces of fabrics, or clay, or other materials to made this feature’s film. She also used “repetition” work to make the object walking , dancing just like the real people. However, it was an artistic film work to present the other funny scene.

In conclusion, after done all the research, I realized that art is not only the frame work and the surface, but also the annotation of the art work and the meaning that what does artist want to present in he/her work.
